My first week in UOF.

So to start out, I will give you some perspective. I played the Great Lakes OSI server for many years in my youth. Argueably the best PvP server in the game, at least when I played (I think any Atl players who jumped to our shard when it was possible could defend that remark, but maybe they are still a little butthurt.) My interest in this server is purely PvP minded.

My first day back was a little frustrating, as I guessed would be. Eventually, I met a Companion (I think that is what they are called.) He helped me tremendously. Showed me the noob dungeon in brit, helped me with some gear from the donation place (very cool idea,) and finally gave me some pointers on my template. I must say I was very impressed. I have played many hardcore games, and never once had I seen anything near the NPE support that was given in my first few hours of play. Big thumbs up to all you volunteers.

My next few days I spent searching for a good spot to hunt and raising gold for a home, which I did with very few problems as long as I stayed away from the dungeons. Then I started a crafter to support my PvP habit. This is where my issues with this server started to set in. There is virtually no way to get a crafter going without being endlessly greifed unless you have a home in a prime mining location.

I came to this server for PvP and I got it, but not how I expected. I hit all the usual PvP spots on the shard, bux den, jhelom docks, minax outpost, yew gate. ALL ghost towns. The PvP on this server seems to happen in all the noob spots like dungeons and minoc mines, or trammey west brit.

For being a hardcore PvP server, no one wants to PvP. I get attacked on my crafter or dungeon crawler, and when I come back on my PvPer they run. So is this server only played by greifers who couldnt hack it on the tougher servers or what? If that's the case, I'll leave before I get too invested.

Personally I havn't gotten too far into the pvp here. I don't have much time to play so its taking me a while to get on my feet but anyways, I have been training my crafter recently with no problems, I GMed tailoring in brit sewers, and I almost have mining GMed via the orc cave. I have experienced many run in with PKs at dungeons on my farming character however, and basically the best way to combat that is having a recall macro ready, or being in a guild who can help you, or just be ready to fight on your dungeon crawler. From my perspective the PvP here seems to revolve around factions along with order/chaos. Most people here are turned off from being Red due to statloss.

Just thought the community might be interested in a new players perspective. Since, you know, growth requires new players...
Well here's the deal, pvp is not huge here right now.. Yes there are pk and some pvp, but this is only the beginning of it for this shard as the true pvp changes were just made in the past two weeks. Right now, most pvp is at the docks in Brit or in dungeons.

As far as crafting goes, it's easy. If you mine, do it in cove so that you can stay in town and mine. There's a small mining area by Brit graveyard but it's not worth using.

Do all of your crafting in the north smith shop in Britain... This is called the crafters guild and gives a resource reduction bonus. Make armor that requires 10ingots, it will only cost 8... Etc

Post on these forums for any questions you may have and check the wiki pages for some indepth info.

Btw, good to see another Great Lakes player. I rolled GL between 98-02.

Thx for some serious replies guys.

@ A'zah. I learned quick about the recall macro. Its not dying im having the issue with. Its that i leave my packy to recall out (yeah i know, bond it.) But im losing the last 10-15 mins worth of ore/ingots I just mined. I've done fairly well training the other skills in a dungeon to remain unknown.

@ halygon. I looked around cove for a forge but couldnt find one. Maybe i need to look a little harder. I didnt know about the blacksmith bonus. I'll definately be heading there for future smithing.

I also didnt realize that the PvP aspect of this server was just starting. Hasn't this server been up for like a year? I heard some guys in the PvP section boasting about the badass PvP crews that (used to be?) here. What happen with all that? Also good to see some GL here. 98-04ish

I dont mean to sound cocky seriously. Im just new and trying to figure some things out.

Im another former GLer. My guild has been here for a few months now. We like to PVP. Order/Chaos and guild wars dont seem to exist much here. We've declared on nearly everyone with no accepting. Alot of PvP comes out of doing PvM. Or we roll around from spot to spot looking for people. Can almost always find something somewhere. I suggest you get together with a crew. If anyone else is interested in warring feel free to say something and *gasp* maybe I could see some oranges on this shard.

A little perspective on what you have experienced. Yes, there is a much larger PK population here that in the old days on the original severs. I've been noting the kill ratio of players killed by players as opposed to killed by monsters (thanks to the death.. umm I mean "Action" cam) and its generally about 2/5 player kills and 3/5 monster kills. TODAY was TOTALLY different,, the ratio is more player kills than monster, and its been steady all day. You also get to see how the pack mentality affects the PKs.. really sad some of them. The bright news is, theres still a lot of good players out there even among the PKs. Nice thing they've just added is a title for the PKs to work for by being nice and ressing people. Also gives you a chance to talk with them, and seriously, the good, the bad, and the ugliest of them all.. are just playing a game. Just play along. If theres something special that might be looting, just ask for it. They may make you pay them, but, agaian.. gets you in a better relationship. So, enjoy the deaths and just try to avoid them.
Last I checked today was when the cam had accumulated just under 4,000 total kills, and the player kills was still just about 500 kills more than the monster kills. Bad day to play monster killer.

Have you tried lvl2 of Fire, Destard, Covetous lich room, Deceit Lich lvl, or lvl5 of Shame? It's kind of rare when I play these areas for a red not to show up.

Shoot me a PM mate. I have a really nice house for mining that you can use. I rarely play anymore so it would be just you.

The new idea of PVP here is to push everyone into factions. UO was never a game of PVP, PVP was just a side effect that came from the growth of a community. You first have to have a good community before you'll ever have good PVP! I'm not sure we'll ever make it to that point??

Exactly... I think we will never make it to that point. The rules here in fact supports griefers, which are not any usefull to the game, but fucking up the game to other players (PvM or PvP based) ..
For example.. a rule, that murder counts decay with time... What is the reason of having this rule? A blue player (griefer) kill 3 other blues.. they are pissed that a blue killed them, cause they didn't expect such an action from a blue. Then he just die, let his ghost standing somewhere for some time, while he is playing a second acc or working or whatever... and *puff* 0 counts blue again.. And guess what he will do? Kill unprepared blues again... In case that some PvP player engage him, he will most probably run, cause he doesn't want to PvP, he wants easy kills and make people mad.. I was thinking about it a lot and there is no intelligent reason, why counts decay in time.

Is someone red? When then he is just red and he has to face the consequences. Bounty system already halves the counts of someone if they reach 50+ (i think) and they are statted. Lets make it simple, if someone wants to get counts down.. 1 count down = 20k gold (or find a better price if you don't agree with this) ... That makes it much easier.. It will separate griefers from PvP players. It makes both PvM players AND PvP players more happy. ... And this is only one example, there are many more things that should be changed to make it more people friendly / griefer unfriendly. .. But no, this won't change.. griefing is the way to go here, which makes harcore PvM players pissed and hardcore PvP players pissed. Unfortunatelly.

Like you, yesterday also marked my first week on the server and similarly came from the old OSI days ( 97-98 on Chesepeake ). My first week was vastly different.

I have been so consumed in getting getting my char sheet up I've barley ventured out of town and when I did dare to go across Brit's bridge into the open world - I laughed vehemently at the red who tried flat out failed to catch me. (It's about the zig-zag silly red, not the straight lines.)

I'll be honest, the majority of my UO OSI time was spent in T2A and without that I'm a little lost of where to go to actually have some decent PvM fun without coughing up the cash and going on treasure adventures.

I find I'm quite hesitant to go into the dungeons because I am still in that in between stage that the loss of my regs and gear would be a huge setback in my progression to actually get a home I can call my own which is my number one priority. (Although, I am a little discouraged at the lack of space I've found so far to place a home, but coming over a year late to the party I honestly wouldn't expect anything different.)

Unlike you OP, I did not come here to PVP, while I love the excitement of the old UO PVP shakes; I'm here to check out the events, the community and just rekindle my love of the game that I've missed so much over these past years without the silly things such as ninjas, elves, bolas and horrible 3D models on a 2D background.

I will say that I am absolutely impressed so far with the forums, community and small touches like the action cam thus far. I like where this server is going and so far enjoy the people of it! (with exception of that pesky Marie Ann in the Brit's Blacksmith yesterday afternoon - I'll get you one day when I have more than just tinker tools in my hand!)

@ KAZ. This wasnt meant to be a "I'm teh shizzle thread," but more like a "state of the server thread." Never once did I say anything about my own talent. I said I came from a talented server. Oh and you where one of the guys talking about all the elite PvP in the PvP section. Where's it at bro? From your post I'll just assume you are another one of the greifers Im talkin about. Trolls are trolls, forums or in-game...

@ Fayt. I never even got to make it to level two, so be happy you got that far.

@ Bluegrey. I wasnt trying to bash this server in anyway. I actually really like this server and think that some of the ideas the Devs have come up with have been great. This server has real potential to be something good. But this community.. this has got to be one of the worst communities I have ever played in. And I've been part of some shitty communities. I dunno what has happened to gamers today, but it seems like they aren't having fun unless they are ruining someone else's day.

im going to have to agree with nubias noxxa quite a bit on this
ive been pk'd 7 or 8 times already in my first week here one of those deaths resulted in losing the deed to a log cabin (it was half the price to buy a deed from moonglow than it was to use the house placement tool risk vs reward etc)
but that sort of thing i shrug off get res'd resupply head back out

i do have a problem with the griefing here
trying to mine at minoc someone just comes along kills the pack horse and then runs away

and the housing situation here i must admit i was very surprised too, for the amount of people that i've seen out and about playing this game there seems to be far too many houses vs population

i played oceania back in 02 - 04 ish and you were still able to place quite a fair few houses

Thanks Rhad, I'll try to keep that in mind from now on. But if thats the case, I dont see myself sticking around too long.

As far as housing goes, this server seems to have an issue with player retention (part of the reason I created this thread.) I would assume the greifing is a big part of the issue. So people come here, get a plot up in the first week or so, then leave shortly after. The IDOC hunters grab the plot when it drops, but has no one to sell it to. So they just sit there. I really dont know how to fix this except maybe to speed up the decay time.
