I'm pretty sure it does help you get higher tier BODS. At 120 I don't ever get T1 and T2 stuff, but on my trash tailor (90 or so skill) I don't think I have even gotten a non exceptional spined.

Pretty much fend for yourself. If you are doing mibs make sure to recall away as soon as you get the chest and kill the elementals. The VCC will offer "protection" but is a scam. Keep your recall button handy and you will be fine.
