Why does it seem crafting skills are set very high?

I GM'd blacksmith in a few weeks, playing casually while also juggling 3-4 other characters, using only ingots I mined myself. It's not that hard (make short spears from like 50-95, then plate gorgets to GM and always smelt after to get ingots back).

The orc cave is the only dungeon in the game with a forge, meaning the only place you can get the 50% skill gain bonus for blacksmith. Lots of people do it. Wear a mask of orcish kin (so orcs won't attack you) and walk all the way to the end somewhere, or just do what I did and find a rune library with a rune called "Orc Caves" or "Orc Forges". ALWAYS put on an orc mask before entering, or you'll be attacked on sight.

I only used the cave from 85+ skill when I first found out about it. Use hiding if you have it, as reds run through there a lot and will take you out. You can hide once, then craft through 1000 ingots, smelt all back down, etc etc without becoming unhidden.

Now carp. THERE'S a craft skill that's actually hard to raise.

I have been working some crafting skills over the past few months (Bowyer/Carp/BS) and it seems like the skill gains are extremely slow, even slower than OSI. I have gone through 10's of thousands of iron ingots in blacksmithing alone to only get to 73 and at this rate, I just don't get it.

I have gone well over 30k+ boards making Heavy's as bowyer to get to 90, and 75-90 was in dungeon, which is a huge pain in the ass to get boards to that character but it does seem a tad better in there but not much.

I have tried using the Brit crafting area and that is a huge waste of time, since thieves have no timer on items stolen, they just play 2 accounts, guard whack their newbie thief and then easily loot whatever they took on a blue standing besides their character.

SEems crafting gains are set next to impossible to gain, much higher than normal it feels.

Smelting/Recycling return seems extremely low as well, almost not even worth the time invested to do so.

Has it been set this way on purpose to discourage people getting GM?

I did blacksmith this week with 16k ingots, and 4 skill scrolls from 96-100
It took 2 days, and I was amazed how fast it went. On OSI in 1998 or so it took like 1,500,000 ingots that cost like 20g each and took like 2 months.

Dont deal with the thieves, get GM hiding on your crafter...get a beetle. You can craft invis, and get off the beetle and use its storage while still hidden.
Also, smith in the orc caves...get a rune for right around the forges, and use your GM hiding to hide there and you can generally craft in peace. Orc mask not needed. Alchemy takes like a day and you can do with just making basically greater poison. Tailoring can be gmd in a day...after you get to oil cloth, you can go with 1 load of cloth and get to gm. Bowyer wasnt too bad, just you can only carry so much wood...and without smelting it makes you sell/trash all the bows, and go to the bank much more often. Smelt/recyle gives you half your ingots back, how is that bad? This is so far out there, I would assume this is just a troll thread more than anything but I could be wrong=P

So I am in the process of doing this, Peepin Tom runs up and down these tunnels all the time (he is a red) and he some how sees you invis. SO needless to say, he just runs right up to your invis character, regardless where you are at, reveals you and 2 shots your macro'er, usually wiithin a few minutes of being there.

I've been seeing this guy around at other places, he says he is GM tracking + reveal but I call bullshit on that, since he is a mage it is really doubtful and even if he was, strange how he can detect anyone in the dungeon and run directly up to them and reveal them. Cocksuckers like this really ruin the game for others, look forward to him being dealt with but that may take some time.

Unfortunately, tracking works with zero skill points invested even against a char with GM Hide/Stealth.
