What do you do to establish yourself?

Since I'm new to this game, I find myself at a loss for what I should be doing a lot of the time. I get this feeling that there's so much that can be done, but never know where to begin, so I just find myself going back to the same dungeons to provo the same mobs and poke em with arrows. It gets old pretty quick. I know maxing this character is a priority, but I'm curious; whenever you (you personally) start out fresh, what's your plan of attack to get yourself established? I know you're not gonna want to divulge in every detail considering how you obtain your wealth might be the result of your own hard-learned methods, but a skeleton of an idea would be nice. I'm speaking in terms of something like - do I start working on a mage when I have a little money saved up? When is it a good idea to start crafting stuff? Should I even attempt treasure hunting right now?

There's all this stuff in this game I really want to do (treasure hunting, mibs, pvp, crafting) but I have absolutely no idea where to begin. If it helps, I have one main character right now who is a provo archer. I guess to put this as simply as possible - what step would you take next?

Looking forward to hearing your input.

It can be a little overwhelming to get started, there really is a lot to do and everyone goes about it differently.

Personally, my first char that I worked was my tamer. I donated a little bit to help jump start the experience so I could afford regs, buy an ethy, etc, and I just went balls out until he was GM. Everything else fell into place after that.

Provo archer is a popular choice, low barrier to entry and low budget to get started. You made the right move there, but if you really wanna pump gold and valuables into the economy grind your tamer. It's an investment that will pay for itself a thousandfold for the opportunity cost of the time you would be putting into provo farming.

Tmaps are good for gold, but a little tedious. Tmappers are easy to make though and definitely profitable.

Crafting/resource gathering is not very profitable here honestly. If you get lucky getting a good BOD pull you can make some easy gold but those are few and far between.

The most important thing is to make sure you map out your chars across your account so you can more effectively dual client to not only farm but also to defend yourself with a PvP char/bail yourself out if you die to spawn or PKs more efficiently. Getting back on your feet quickly and moving on to the next grind is important for sure.

Maybe make a mage tamer you can tag team with your provo archer and even have your thunter on a third account opposite those two?

Tamers suck to raise, but there's a reason for it. Nothing beats 'em.

Thanks for the response man. I have a mage made on a separate account for the exact reason you specified but I haven't worked on them at all since a) my provo archer isn't 100 percent complete and b) I wanted to plant a house and need 1200 skill points on one account? So now I have to worry about working on characters on this account first. A lot of work it seems.

Tamers seem like a lot of fun and it's definitely something I've wanted to try, but I've heard getting taming up is enough to make someone want to quit this game.

He is right, but a lot of people dont stick to tamer grinds im at 73 but only did it for prob total of 11 hours or maybe more, but not consistent grind, Provo/archers are easy to raise easy to build and very profitable it will work it self to buy taming ss's, but if you can stick to the grind of a tamer and get pets, bond them or even not bonded it will make your money sky rocket.

I think that starting out with a provo archer is probably the easiest and best way to go (if planning a non-crafter). Bard mages are okay but I got bored with mine and was changing him into an alchy stun mage before I began taking a break from the game. I also got worn down by creating too many alts and spread focus too thin. This is what I use for a provo archer: GM Archery/Tactics/Provo/Music/80 Res Spells/80 Healing/80 Anat/60 Magery. Works very well and easily trainable very quickly. A tamer is certainly top PvMer in UOF but takes either a ton of time or metric fuck-ton of money to complete (I've heard something like hundreds of hours of mindless taming if you don't invest in the highly expensive SS).

My advice? Find a good guild. Regardless of your template plans a guild will get you folks willing to assist and share resources.

It's not uncommon to hear people telling you a .1-.2 skill gain in taming (read: MAYBE) per hour is standard after around the 80 mark. Then plan on millions and millions of gold to get to 120.

I've got a tamer. There is a reason why it was the last character I made and is one that will remain largely unplayed. Unless I end up disabled or something. :p

Haha it's no picnic but the juice is worth the squeeze for sure.

If you wanna take the fast track to getting a house just train up skills from NPCs :)

I have to agree with Fingers, your best bet is to join a guild that would be willing to take you on and help you out, there are some very good guilds to join. Make sure you check out their reps and read their members postings, that way you can get a good feel to see if they are a good fit.

Good luck, I hope you enjoy it on UOF

Start with a provocation character with a fighting skills to establish wealth.
Use that wealth to create a crafter
Use the crafter to feed armor and weapons to your "PvPer" if that's your thing
Become established in the community, many doors will open for you. 90% of the gold I've made was not from monsters.
Get a house and make friends, playing ultima online makes it boring. Other players can offer more content.

Joining a guild and networking is definitely a solid idea. But nothing compares to being able to be self sufficient without need to depend on anyone for anything. The faster you can achieve that the better.
