Ultima Online Naval Combat has been REBORN.
No longer will sailing the Sosarian seas be doldrum experience. You can now indulge in your inner mariner, for revamped boating is here.
Arr, Join in on the Fun Matey
Joining in on the fun is easy. Head down to your nearest shipwright and purchase one of the basic ships. All ships come equipped with cannons by default. You can now set sail on the high seas, however, yer vessel is not combat ready yet Cap'n.
Getting to Know the New Ship System
Ultima Online Forever: Reborn has introduced a whole slew of new ship mechanics. In fact, we've completely rebuilt the boating system from the ground up. Vessel control has been made smoother, combat has been made more exciting and rewarding and the fun factor has been increased 10 fold. In this section, we will detail the basics of the new system and hopefully by the end of this section, you will all be new old hands at seafaring, UOF style.
Ship Commands
Ship commands may only be issued by people who have some sort of authority on the vessel. Captains have full authority and can thus command the ship in its entirety. Officers of the ship can command the helm, fire the cannons and add deckhands to the ship. Deckhands are able to replenish cannon ammo supply and fire the cannons. Vessel authority can be granted at any time from the Captain or Officers through the vessel gump.
All previous boating commands are supported, here are a list of them:
- Forward
- Forward Left
- Forward Right
- Back/Backward
- Right
- Left
- Turn Left
- Turn Right
- Raise Anchor
- Drop Anchor
- Turn About
We have also introduced several new boating commands, these are:
- Embark
- Speaking embark near a vessel your are a captain, officer or deckhand of will cause you to be transported to a random location on the deck. This only works if you are not currently on a ship. The closest vessel to you is always chosen first. This command can also be accessed through the new vessel gump. Followers will be moved to the ship along with you.
- Disembark
- Speaking disembark while on a vessel will allow you to leave your current vessel. After speaking disembark, an aiming reticule will appear on your screen. You can then target land near you. This will move you off the boat and to your specified location. This transports followers off of ships as well.
- Fire Left/Fire Port
- Fires a cannon volley from the port-side cannons. This is a criminal action if innocent creatures or humans are hit with the resulting cannon fire.
- Fire Right/Fire Starboard
- Fires a cannon volley from the starboard-side cannons. This is a criminal action if innocent creatures or humans are hit with the resulting cannon fire.
- Deploy the Cannons
- This will deploy all retracted cannons. Deployed cannons are vulnerable to enemy fire. However, cannons must be deployed in order for them to shoot at the enemy.
- Retract the Cannons
- This will deploy all retracted cannons. Retracted cannons are immune to enemy cannon fire but cannot fire until deployed.
- Take the Helm
- Allows you to steer your vessel with your mouse. This is only usable by unmounted characters.
- Leave the Helm
- Relinquish control of the helm and revert back to normal boat command steering.
Ship Movement
Smooth ship movement which was introduced with the old boat combat system is still in. However, we have also introduced mouse control. To take control of your vessel and steer it with your mouse, say "Take the Helm" while on the ship. Only Captains and Officers may use this command. To finish steering the boat, say "Leave the Helm". The helm can only be controlled by unmounted characters.
Accessing Your New Ship
As you may have already noticed, boat ropes and ship planks have been removed. Along with this, so to have ship keys went the way of the dodo. In their place, we have introduced the embark/disembark commands and ship runes.
To board your vessel, say embark while near it. The verbal embark command will place you upon the nearest ship your own or have authority over. The embark command can also be access via the vessel gump. The embark command does not work while you are embarked on another vessel.
To leave your vessel, say disembark. You must be embarked on a vessel to use this command. The disembark command will bring up an aiming reticule, which will allow you to target a piece of land to be teleported to.
Boat runes allow you to recall to your ship. When you place a ship, two boat runes will be placed into your packs. Be wary! Ship runes are stealable! Always keep at least one of the runes in your bank!

New Ship Related Items
With the removal of certain mechanics and the introduction of others, we had to create tow new items and repurpose one to meet our new needs.
Galleon CraftingWith the removal of certain mechanics and the introduction of others, we had to create tow new items and repurpose one to meet our new needs.
The Grappling Hook
The grappling hook allows players to board any vessel they are not currently on. Boarding a vessel with an innocent player on it is counted as a criminal act. Boarding undamaged vessels is significantly harder than attempting to board a significantly damaged vessel. Both this item and a superb version of it are available through tailoring.
The Special Fishing Net
An item you all know and love has been retooled to allow for the capturing of enemy pets. You will now be able to capture pets with it if the owner is dead or is not nearby. Injured pets are significantly more easier to capture than uninjured pets.
The Repair Kit
The repair kit allows you to repair your hull, sails and cannons. Repairing costs are as follows:
- Hull - 1 wood per tick
- Sails - 1 cloth per tick
- Cannons - 1 ingot per tick
Galleons have been removed from the gold sink vendor and have been placed on the carpentry crafting menu. Galleons will require that you find the recipe for a specific ship first. All recipes can be found through either fishing (very low chance) or through doing whirlpools (high chance).
Galleons will retain the color of whatever cloth is used to craft them. Listen up tailors! This means your BOD cloth has another purpose. Want a snazzy colored ship? Get out that BOD cloth.
Whirlpools Redux
Whirlpools have been redone by Dev Peppy I mean Eppy. They are now much more rewarding (as well as much more dangerous). To start taking part in whirlpool adventures, head on over to the pirate NPC over by the poker tables. For a measly 10k, you can sign-up for the adventure of a lifetime!
Double clicking this NPC will bring up this gump:
Whenever a whirlppol spawns, this gump will pop up on your screen:
Head over to the coordinates mentioned in the gump to find a whirlpool. Once found, begin fishing from it to activate it! Beware, whirlpools are very desirable and only one person can fish from them at a time. You may find yourself with some company at them, so come prepared!
