I had a similar question about this yesterday. Here's the info I received:
Nearest targets the two closest enemies, closest targets the single closest.
^^Here's what the drop down menu looks like. I personally selected 'any' in subcategory 'gray' and 'murderer' respectively for 2 separate hotkeys. This will chose who you wish to target, then there's another option for pet kill commands in hotkeys, bind that and you're set.
