Everyone I'm asking is saying that they can be transferred just like any other pet, without turning back into an egg. So I'll keep looking into this, maybe @Shane or @Adam can help us out here?

He won't turn back into an egg but the xp will reset for the level. So, he'll stay at stage 3 but the exp for stage 3 will go to 0
