Shield with/without parrying?

I have question.

I use katana for my melee char. but the char doesn't have parrying.

it seems that AR dramatically increases with equipping shield but is this the true AR?

I mean is this AR applied only with parrying skills? or am I just getting the benefit of shield without parrying skill?

I think parrying gives you the ability to parry hits and most effective using a shield, and is not related to AR.

The use of a shield is important for the parry skill to work, but it also works without a shield (got this information from UO Guide), but then you have less probability to parry a hit.
