New player Build

Keltonator

Grandmaster
(95/60/70)-str/dex/int
1. Archery
2. Tactics
3. Magery
4. Meditation
5. Resist Spells
6. Musicianship
7. Provocation
Archery and Magery are a little more expensive to train, as you'll need arrows and regs, so I'd suggest using a different weapon skill like fencing or swords in place of archery, and get healing and anatomy in place of Magery and meditation until you save up a little bit of gold to train those.

Read my edit. But yeah, I've had no problem with this template, and I know many others use it as well. It is a monster for solo pvm, and once you get the archery and Magery up you'll have plenty of defense against pks as well. I'd say this is the best pvm template you're gonna find outside of a tamer or a dexxer talisman.

Keeping the healing/anat is okay, personally I find having Magery/med to be much more versatile. But, your call.

Correct, you'll always have to carry regs on you. But you get used to it. When you start hunting plenty you'll have no problems with the cost. The only thing that may be a little cumbersome is having to restock when you get killed.

Dont even need a butler tbh... Obviously it does help but simple restock macros exist for such poor people as myself :)

Sorry Define Butler lol. like a mule char to deliver?
It's literally a butler. Well, sort of. It's a Dono vendor item that you can buy and put in your house. This npc dude that you can stock with regs, pots, armor, etc. then you just click him, select what you want to withdraw and it goes into your bag. They're super expensive though, like $100 US, so if you find a good guild they may have one you can use. Just be courteous and help restock him from time to time.

I am also a new player starting out after not playing since 99. What weapon skill would you recommend, fencing, swords, or mace fighting?

Totally depends on your playstyle.

Swords seem to be the most plentiful and affordable followed by fencing and then macing. Most people will go swords/fencing for their provo bards due to the swing speed compared to maces.

Since I haven't played in ages... What is the benefit of provocation? Does it make going through dungeons easier?

It does...you can basically Provoke Monster A to attack Monster B so that their attention is on each other and not on you. You can get big money this way as you can provoke higher level monsters onto each other/other monsters (dragons, paragons, titans, balrons, shadow wyrms, ancient wyrms, shadow daemons, etc).

As @Keltonator said, this is probably the 2nd or 3rd best moneymaking PvM build in the game behind a meta tamer and a meta dexxer/mage.

As far as weapon choices go, you should consider the special moves of each. Many dexxers use fencing because you can use para blow (80+ fencing and anatomy), which will temporarily stun your target like 4 seconds I think, in which time they can't move, attack, cast, etc. giving you a little time to heal, run away, get a Provo or whatever. Super helpful. Also great for pvp. Then there's crushing blow and concussion blow for macing and swords respectively. Also keep in mind that you can poison certain weapons with swords and fencing, but I don't think there are any macing weps you can apply poison to.
