Genocide Pete
Adept
My reason tells me that we need a better reason for why meta pets are able to be lost AT ALL. It seems obvious that there shouldn't be a built-in system that punishes tamers to the tune of up to 50 million gold for simple negligence. Not sure when OP asked Eppy that but i'm betting it was awhile ago. Right now as it stands if you crash, we get dos'd anything like that or server goes down- your pets get stabled. The only way to currently LOSE a meta pet is if it gets lured into a house, otherwise it will not go wild, or get released. We've done absolutely everything with-in reason to protect people from losing their pets. The rest is up to them.
This would be a bit like if we required houses to be manually locked before logging off lest they become lootable. Yes, it'd be "their fault" if they forgot to lock their door, but it's a senseless and unnecessary mechanic to begin with, would lead people to quit the game, and the punishment doesn't match the offense (i.e., perform this trivial task every time you play otherwise you might lose everything you've worked toward).
Pet trapping is an old mechanic adopted from a UO that didn't have pets worth tens of millions of gold (and it was bad even then). Nostalgia isn't justification enough for such a backward mechanic, and keeping it around looks like a greedy move given the various donation items designed to lessen the chance of losing one's pet.
