I open UOF and the client asks me for account name and password. I thought UOF was free to play?

You can use the client download file available here on the UOForever website. This will open the client that you're seeing now to login. It's setup to direct you to the UOF server rather than the EA server.
To make an account just make up any username and a password in the client window. You will be logged in and the account gets created automatically.
If there's an issue, either the account name is taken (try another) or you're mistakenly using the EA client.
