A guild mate of mine placed sixth in the event. He spent ~50 hours there. For 6th place he got a statue of a sand elemental. That seems like a bit of a gyp. Didn't #2-24 at the last event get meta steed eggs?

How many got statues? I am not in game to check my bank box. Seems fine to me. At least he got a limited statue that only a small amount of people out of hundreds on the server.
It's about the event mate, not the physical reward. Mindlessly bashing elementals for 50 hours was his reward. That in itself should be satisfying.
Being able to bash mobs in guardzone with res ankhs all around.
Millions of gold up for grabs (assuming you were looting gold).
Tons of high end weapons dropped.
Tons of XP to be had for meta's and talismen.
Crystallites dropped during the second half.
Rares dropped during the second half.
More crystallites were given to top 10.
Rewards that were stated from the start were also given to the top 10 (in your guild mates case, a unique rare statue).
I think it's more than enough.
The event itself was enough IMO. Lot's of fun.
With that said, you shouldn't be instantly set for life in UOForever if you do one single event.
