How can you tell how much a weapon does?

So are you not able to know how much damage a wep does compared to another one? I'm confused lol. How do you know if one set of armor is better then the other?

There are different ways. Ill try my best to explain it.
Two handed weapons are slow and stronger
One handed weapOns are fast and weaker.
With exceptions, but that's a solid truth.

If you buy a weapon from an npc it'll do the base weapon damage.
Magical weapons will increase the damage. In order of weakest to greatest, magical weapons come as: ruin, might, force, power, vanishing. The damage increases with every step up.
Exceptional weapons (they'll say exceptional on it) are made by grandmaster blackSmith's. They are slightly equivalent to a force weapon. A little weaker.
Magical weapons can have a max of four properties. Accuracy, damage bonus, tactics bonus and slayer ( dbl damage to specific monster types).

Magical weapons can have a max of four properties. Accuracy, damage bonus, tactics bonus and slayer ( dbl damage to specific monster types).

This is not completely accurate. Macing, Fencing, and Sword weapons can have a max 4 properties: Durability (Massive, Substantial, Indestructible), Damage Bonus (Ruin, Might, Force, Power, Vanq), Tactic Bonus (Accurate, Surpassingly, Eminently, Exceedingly, Supremely (+5, 10, 15, 20, 25 respectively)) and a Slayer (Silver, Repond, Reptilian, etc.)

Archery Weapons replace the Tactic Bonus for an Accuracy Bonus using the same names it is +5, 10, 15, 20, & 25 to Archery.

Tactics gives a damage bonus. Your chance to hit depends on your Weapon Skill: Archery, Fencing, Macing, and Swords.

If you are trying to decide which weapon to use, say, long sword vs. katana: for PvM I really believe it is truly preference. I'll go ahead and list what I remember as classically being the weapons of choice.

Archery:
Bow

Swords:
Katana (1H) - Fastest weapon speed for Swords (there's some love for the vikiing sword too).
Halberd (2H) - Best Max Damage w/o LJing

Axes:
I am not sure exactly. I believe the Double Axe has the fastest swing speed. Axes with LJing benefits, I believe, a +30% damage bonus.

Fencing:
Kryss (1H) - Fastest weapon for Fencing
Short Spear (2H) - Fastest 2H Weapon - (the Spear has the max damage)

Macing:
??? (1H) - You'd have to ask someone that regularly runs a macer.
War Hammer (2H) - Yup.

Everything between the weapons I listed fall somewhere in between.

I suggest playing around with different weapons and find what you like best. If you are trying to decide on a weapon skill to go with I would advise Swordsmanship for the sheer availability of those magic weapons.
