Does failed lockpicking of a chest lose items?

I failed a couple of times picking a clever chest. I never saw a 'puff of gas' message.

Did some items disappear for each failure?

I don't think so. That would be pretty broken here considering how ridiculously crazy lockpicking is on this shard.
