DEX & Lockpicking

Is there a link between low DEX and getting better lockpicking gains?

My lockpicking is currently 94.7 or so, with DEX at 25. I know I could have taken it higher using just lockboxes if I had locked dex at 10, but I didn't, but don't really care. I really want to ditch magery on this character and make him an archer but don't want to boost my dex back up to 100 if it will stunt future lockpicking gains.

One you hit 95 lockpicking you won't ever gain off of the gm tinker boxes. You need to manually go to lower level dungeons and find the lvl 4-5 chests. Or do level 4 & 5 tmaps. But I've just found it best to mark the dungeon chests and just recall through a book on the lock picker.

Agreed with the above, just a whole lot of picking to do. I see folks recalling in to pick just certain chests, but it seemed like I still got a 0.1 here and there off random chests. My method was to just walk the dungeon and pick every fucking thing in sight that was pickable and recall out when I had 10k gold on me or hit max weight. Still took many moons.

There is a link actually. If you start your character off with 10 Dex and lock it down, then your shown skill will stay lower and when you get close to 95 skill, you will be able to gain about .5 more (or so) points before your actually hit 95. If you let dex go all the way up to 100, by the type you get to 94 real skill, your shown skill will already be at 95. Since lockpicking is a ***** from 95 on, those extra .5 points are well worth it in the long run.

Other that shown skill, dex has no bearing on lockpicking.
