the best thing to do is learning how players think... by that way if you are REALLY dedicated you can steal all the blessed items you want :)
The thief class is something that doesn't concern ingame mechanics at all, you need to be a little more italian for make it works well XD

Lol, I've read the book about this guy `Flawless` several times... as, i live in a Belgium and it was one of the biggest diamond heists in history! nice :)

i think the best thing to do, if you really want to improve the thief in Ultima Online, is removing teleports and dimensional archway from the house design.

Without giving to much away, this concerns the skill itself not tinkering with in game mechanics *could be frowned upon* to remove people of their goods. Right and wrong eh?

or make it to where when you sneak into someones bags on sallos it actually closes when the person moves away as it does on the other 2 clients..... or not because people who use sallos suck dick and need any type of advantage they can get

you should try using sallos sometimes, @Kilike. As soon as they go off screen their bag closes. Steam is 10x stronger than sallos when playing a thief, I can press one button on steam and steal whatever i want.

Some ideas:

What if at level 10 the meta thief talisman gloves allow you to break into houses? The ability to open the doors to someones house isn't detrimental on it's own. The detrimental part is if I sneak in when you're not home and you unlock an item without tracking/revealing and I get lucky.

The thief would also need 100 lockpicking and whenever you try to pick a locked door there would be a success chance (level 1 - 1%; level 10 - 10%). When you open the door a game message says "the lock quickly yields to your skilled hands". Could also be good for idocs to gain position and control of the inside of the house.

Every level that you gain on the talisman reduces the number of tiles you need to be away from an NPC to steal undetected. At level 1 if I'm within 10 tiles then the NPC will detect and call guards (if that's what it is now, I'm not sure). Then at level 10 only if I'm within 1 tile of an NPC will they detect and call guards.

Relic idea - "Larceny":
- Gives you a certain % chance as it levels up for you to steal cool shit off the champions from champ spawns.
- I don't care what the items are but make them steal-able only with this relic so there's value to it. Make there be 2 different steal-able items per boss so 12 new items - one more rare than the other (10 : 1 ratio). Additionally, if a champion artifact would have dropped (presuming it's pre-determined that a champ is going to drop an artifact) then the artifact could get stolen first by a meta thief with a % chance that's higher than the other 2 more rare items since this champ was going to drop the artifact anyways.
- Cool-down would be 180 seconds at level 1 and 60 seconds at level 10.
- Success rate would be low but not TOO low so that you know there is always some chance on any champion to get something. Success chance could start around 0.25% at level 1 and 5% at level 10.
- Since Champions are only alive for a few minutes, stealing attempts on a champion can't be the only way to gain. So add some new or existing items to any monsters that can only be stolen by meta thieves and will level you up.
- Gaining this relic makes your success chance rise and cool-down reduce so it's worth grinding to get dece items off champions with stealing.

I want to do something for crafters but I haven't come up with something that just blows my socks off
As suggested before, give us a tali that when maxxed let's us use the brit craft buff in our house. Relics? One to lower bod timer, one to increase chance for better bods, ummm that's all I've got right now.

The biggest issue with steam is the ability to autosteal, but the issue now is that most thieves who use steam, use the script. I have been so tempted to use it myself and forget about traditions...

Steam is far more powerful for thieves no doubt, but if you steal the legit way; sallos is far stronger than the others.

Thinking out loud, you could make it so there's an ultra low chance that you can pick open a secured chest. The chance would be so low that a solo picker would not be able to do it in any reasonable timeframe (unless they get extremely lucky), so you'd need 2 or 3 pickers all looping lockpicking on it in between each other's cooldowns. You could also make a security system type feature which will have a random chance to spawn creatures/cast spells/alert the house owner on a failed pick attempt on a secure chest.

So you pick open the front door or somehow steal the owner's key and copy it, then gate in a team of thieves to start trying to pick the chest open. Owner is in a dungeon somewhere and gets an alert that someone's trying to access his chest. Recalls back home with his crew and they smash it out.

The thieves don't really face a lot of risk in this scenario, apart from time investment and a bunch of lockpicks, so there would need to be some specialist gear involved in order to do this stuff. Maybe some super fragile lockpicks craftable only by a 120 tinker out of certain materials, who knows. It could also create a goldsink opportunity for people to invest in more house security to prevent this sort of stuff.

I like the concept, but being able to break in when people are offline would be to easy, and cause to many tears. I don't see that ever being added.
