I don't ever remember human town NPCs ever having more than a very small amount of gold on them. Maybe 10-40 gold or something. I don't know where you're getting this from that NPCs are supposed to have deep pockets.
Also escorting is super easy and if you get the right runes you can always find someone to be escorted.

Oh, that's interesting. I'd never heard that before. Did they pay you your escort reward out of that gold? If not, could you escort them and then kill them after?
It was a seperate pool they paid you for i believe. But basically once it was found out...everyone picked up enticement and would lure the 7 that spawned in moonglow and kill them. I got a silver vanq kat and a silver vanq axe within the first few i did. Osi basically caught on and changed it about a month later. But it was one of the big causes of massive vanqs on the server. I know i got close to 200 vanqs and i found out about it late.

same goes for me. I made my first 10k off escorts, even when I didn't have enough magery to gate. One can simply run them, too!
You can also buy gate scrolls if you only have like 50 magery and use those. That's what I did when I started out too.

We used enticing to lure the npc out of town to kill. Every now and then we looted a vanq weapon. I think mostly a broadsword. Was kinda fun.
