One way is to buy "a house placement tool" at the carpentry shop and run out in the woods and find a spot to place a house. There are plenty of spots out there to find you a great starter house.
I know one spot where you can fit a small tower now as we speak, I can show you that spot if you want to, but there actually are space lil here and there around the map if you just take some time looking for it. When I was out training taming for a few month ago I had my tool with me and checked everywhere, there were many areas to place houses. Not the biggest but still a good.

I know of a place you can place a 10x10.. I can place for you if you don't have a placement tool and sell it to you for the placement cost

DingDong is right there are plenty of spots around just need to keep ur eyes open for em. Sometimes houses drop, get looted, and not replaced cos its not really worth the time to try and resell. Or just post in forums til someone shows ya a nice spot ;-)
