I thought bonding was transferable? The latest patch notes indicated they were. is this not the case?

it does not transfer, meaning you will have to bond and not use your pet until bonding is complete or risk losing pet to death or someone possibly stealing it.

Meta pets will transfer as bonded. All other pets will revert to un bonded.
