you get exp based on the damage you do, and difficulty of the mob. so two 10 dmg hits yield the same talisman xp as one 20 dmg hit. but that 20 dmg hit earns you more xp on an ogre lord vs an ogre.
so you need either a tamer/bard friend to keep the tough mobs attention off you, or get gear that mitigates damage without gaining armor. swampy dragon with barding costs you no tali gain and grains a 20% (i think) damage reduction. slayer armor (on normal leather, not exceptional) adds minimal ar and good mitigation. just wear as few pieces as you can get away with. reactive armor helps in a pinch but doesn't last long.
ogre lords are particularly challenging for a zerker as they deal heavy melee damage which a zerker is uniquely unable to handle. equally difficult (in terms of xp scaling) mobs that do more magic damage are a better fit for a zerker.
Yes that's correct. You'll see a lot of people using a katana to level the zerker tali because additional ticks means faster gains. I have a level 6 LJ zerker and the axe is too fun to use to switch to a katana. Unless you pick up parry for the leveling, you're going to win up jousting everything decent anyway.
Depending on your resources - shop bought leather ar with slayer runes only gives a 12% xp reduction but would allow you to tank mobs far better - I remember paragon daemons being doable. You will likely kill far faster to compensate for the slight xp penalty from wearing some ar.
