A price checker tool

Since many players seem to ask for prices for items to sell and are unable to find them, what about creating a price checker tool?

Perhaps not in-game, but on the Internet.

A price checker tool, which helps you to find current prices for rares / profession items / currency / homes and such.

It could be player-handled, so that trusted / active players update current prices for example once per month. Full item catalog / Professions / Housing lists get updated once per month.

Something like:

Let me know, if this is something you would want.

Personally I'm not sure, if I have enough motivation to make this further, but I could help with designing this tool and developing its front-end side. The real problem is that I don't know all the prices, so it would need a bunch of active players, who know prices for sellable items.

This would work as "stock union", which is maintaining the economy. Obviously players are free to sell items at any price, but if they don't know anything about prices, this could be the tool for it.

Any ideas?

Only issue I see is the bolded text. There is so much room for abuse there that an impartial party (staff) would be best, but they (staff) have more important things to deal with then maintaining a database...quite the conundrum of sorts. In part, this reminds me of the Federal Reserve system in the United States... Great idea though; I like it and it sure beats doing searches.

I was just thinking about making one of these. That is so great that someone else is doing it and I don't have to.

yeah idk if i like it or not honestly, if thats the case just grab the auction code and implement that so everyone in game can just do that, but honestly having an auction system kills it for me. Kills bank sitters, makes people think server is dying, makes people leave, devalues stuff at a WAYYYYY faster rate. Totally against an AH, but this is like the first step too it although i kind of like it too if is updated monthly or something idk. Just some thoughts

This is a great idea and I'd like to offer my development skills. I've been a programmer for 10 years.

Hey man if this happens what would you wanna do it in? I would actually love to help and get involved, maybe even put it in my resume, not to mention get some experience working with someone out side of college in a professional setting?

That's what I'm worried about. I'm not sure the issues this solution might bring to us. People are able to check current prices and try to sell lower in order to get stuff sold easier and faster and that way prices get low pretty fast. Adding place setting to prices and getting profit might become more difficult, since people know prices. Now as people do not know prices, getting profit is much easier and market area is more free than it would be with this price checker tool.

What this might root out is players selling items in lower price. For example players are selling ethys for 130k, when their real price is 150k, if according to Donation currency. That's only sellers cause though.

I've planned to do somewhat basic jQuery search that reads .txt files (we only have to update them), but if there are people with time and passion to build something better, that's awesome. Now we only need players, who know prices. And maybe SQL database somewhere (I've got only one at my server).

Players, who know prices. :) That's what we need.

Just make sure, like i told you it sits in line with our terms of use here.
Like i said in the past we've had people attempt to make fansites and get a bunch of people to help them and then filter our traffic into their website.
This is something that is a huge no-no.
We don't pay for advertising etc just to filter people away from the website. So make sure on this, i'm still on the fence about something like this if it's not part of the actual UOF website itself.
