Stop spawning a rare if there are more than x on the server?

In the stickied post on stealable rares, @JoeB wrote

I attempted to make sure all of them remained reasonably rare for a long period of time but obviously saturation is inevitable.

What if some rares spawned only when there were fewer than a certain number of them on the server? That would stop saturation and those rares would remain rare.

Just throwing it out there.

the problem is 'reasonably rare' means taking a one of a kind and making it common. The rares market has gone to complete shit because of saturation (too many types of rares and too many of each type in existence).

The rares market got blown out and as someone who's thirst for UOF rares was once insatiable I couldn't care less.

too many types of rares

That was my first impression on this server (I've only played this and OSI ~2000). It's like snowflakes. Each one is maximally rare (unique), but the fact that there are millions of these unique things outside my house makes them all un-unique.

The first couple years weren't bad, it was the same rares. Then those 25ish rares were replaced with like 75, then those quickly replaced with another batch of I don't know how many.

I spent two years acquiring the spots and timers for the first batch of rares. I spent weeks searching the map to get the timers and spots for the second batch. I didn't even bother looking for the third batch or any since.

Your snowflake analogy is very apt.

@Kilike told me me I was rare and unique and beautiful. But I'm starting to think he lied because now he never answers my calls and I see him checking his phone a lot more than he used to :(

On topic though. I remember joeb said something had happened in the past that kinda made it meh. From my understanding he had worked really hard on getting a system done and new rares out. I don't even know if all of the rares he made have been found finally. I know a small group had a lockdown on a huge chunk of them.

Rares just aren't easy to generate interest for, thus creating a market.

Yeah Carl took great pleasure in fucking up rares. Taking unique or ultra rare items and putting them on the dono vendor, purposely trolling rares hunters by saying rares are spawning over the weekend when they weren't, etc etc

I know @JoeB put a lot of thought into the new rares and I think if he had been doing it from the start there might be some interest. I do regret revealing what I had been doing to get location and spawn times though :/

But really rares never had much of a chance on UOF with the dono vendor imo. Good example would be the three HUGE spider webs I had at one time, paid like 2-3 mil apiece. Halloween dono vendor had the web plus a bunch of other deco as a single item, costing like 750k lol.

I used to idoc like fucking crazy to afford shit like a two tile marble table monthly rare, now there is no point. It was never really about how something looked but about how rare it was.
