Slayer spell book review

I propose that there be some type of repair option for slayer spell books. Currently slayer spell books are a big money sink. They cost 16 blank scrolls @4-5gp each and there is no way to regain your resources akin to a blacksmith resmelting katanas or krysses that do not roll a slayer. You can't sell the spell books to mage vendors to recover gold either. I understand that carpenters and bowyers face the same battle but the key difference is that once a slayer bow, staff or blade is crafted it can essentially be repaired endlessly. Slayer spell books cannot. Meta mages also have to consume mana and reagents in their fighting. Both of those cost time and money to manage an efficient way to farm. Dexxers can stand there and fight and swing and not worry about managing their character like a meta mage has to with mana. Bandages are also dirt cheap which make fighting and farming for a meta dexxer much cheaper than a mage. Perhaps this was the way the meta mage was supposed to differ from meta dexxers, I don't know. I just was hoping to put the discussion out there to give consideration to meta mages and their slayer spell books.

One idea could be that instead of repairing a spell book to full charges, maybe the spell book will lose 20% of its maximum charges every time it gets repaired. Or some percentage which will allow a meta mage to use the books for awhile longer but eventually replace with a new one. Or perhaps repairing has a chance to break the spell book entirely. I am up for any ideas on this topic.

Lastly, on pacosbil's stream this afternoon, StonedSouthern came up with a good idea I liked. He suggested we allow the slayer deeds that tinkers craft be able to be applied to spell books. I thought this was a very good idea as well.

If anyone has any ideas or feedback all is welcome. Thank you.

Hate the deeds but they trash the weapon after 2k uses so...at least there's that.

Give the crafted books a bump in # of uses maybe?

As a person who sells slayer spellbooks, I put a lot of work into creating/holding stock on my vendor for my customers, it's a crap shoot getting certain slayers, especially supers with a 2.5% chance for a slayer (which is approx. 640 scrolls for one slayer book), and then 15 of the 27 books you make are next to worthless, because no on cares to have a scorpion book.. or a gargoyle book... can't even sell them at 1 gp per charge, on average 1-2k, and for those keeping track, that's a loss of gold, when scrolls are 5 gp each. But that's the livelihood of a scribe - because it's a pain in the ass, that's why we can actually sell the books, and make some margins off of them.

If some other profession were able to come in and make slayers for spellbooks (like Tinkers), I'd be pissed, because that'd be taking away from the time and effort I've put into being a scribe. Even if it's limited to scribes making the deeds, I believe that'd put a dent into the spell book market, because right now high end spell books are bought by high end mages, and most of them have, or can afford a 120 scribe, they are just too lazy to make their own books, if it's a two step process to make the deed you want, and apply it to a book, then the laziness factor really goes out the window..

I feel the same way about the slayer weapon deeds - I can't believe there isn't more outrage from crafters, because it's a direct hit on a merchant Blacksmiths bottom line and livelihood. I can appreciate needing to give the tinkers something, but giving them someone else's livelihood is just wrong. I'm curious to know how a slayer deed will affect the market long term. Since I haven't seen much information posted on the slayer deeds, and have only see 6 or 7 different ones for sale, I'm assuming it's super slayers only - which means that lesser slayers are more or less rendered obsolete. What will the market look like in a month? Will lesser slayers still be available for cheap, for newer players?
