how do i get a relic from a champ spawn?

do i have a chance as soon as i contribute anything to killing the spawn? or is it only if i contribute to killing the boss?

also does the chance increase with the more damage i do to the spawn/boss?

Every time I got one it seems I'd have to do a bit of damage on the boss, as in run in, hit him 10~ times, run out hide near him(within the power scroll range.) I also believe I got them all while in the top 10, although that may have nothing to do with it.

This and a lot of people run 3 accounts at the champs to up there chances
