pet skill loss

This problem had been brought up again and again since 2014.
The experienced tamers on the server mostly agreed that there are some serious problem with this mechanic and changes must be made in order to balance out the loss and gain, especially on Resist and Magery

In 2016 Aug, @Shane mentioned that:

"I've heard about this issue for awhile, i know it's an issue, but i don't wanna remove pet skill loss totally for sure. HOWEVER if it's impossible to regain pet skills at a certain level then we will look at it for sure."

- Why is pet skill loss ignored? https://www.uoforum.com/threads/why-is-pet-skill-loss-ignored.84967/

It almost a year now, are there any update?

There is no new thread about this issue in 2017, I think most of us has already given up hope :(

It is a problem, absolutely zero gains on Magery and Poisoning on lvl 6 meta Dragons, Resist can be gained on ancient liches and dragons.

Join factions and be "Gang Banged" at any moment anywhere, No Thanks, haven't been in a faction since late 1999 or early 2000's but it isn't pleasant to be attacked in town while trying to transact business with 10,000 or 1,000,000 gold item on you.

here is the latest gossip I have overheard I have no idea what the meaning is or if is, they are not related, but I directly heard these two statements

shane said he is changing some things with guilds soon and he is almost ready to test it, ...

eppy said " faction pet resses suck anyway i may change something with it soon"
when I asked what would be changed, eppy said... "something"

I have complained greatly about the skill loss and the inability to regain up to max stat or in magery and resist the inability to gain at all its a downward trajectory. I am a bard tamer that has no ability to 1v1 and so joining factions was a absolute last resort to quitting or joining a zerg group. I have been in the same guild for 5 years BUT I had to leave that guild to infact join factions. I also choose not to play salos so I'm compounding my pvp disadvantage because I enjoy the game even though this server is entirely directed at PVP and I exclusively enjoy PVM. that's not my fault its not something that's changing it is what it is, thus my pvp problem is compounded even more by server selection.

currently I cant do any server events because of my faction status, but because of the stat problem for pets and the fact that you cannot "reroll" until you have 120 taming (15 mil ontop of the 35 mil sunk into the pet for relics) this is the path I have taken. I spam drework velgro non stop now as I train my meta and save for 120 taming. there is a very good chance when i'm 120 taming and level 7.5 meta that I leave factions to once again enjoy the game inbetween getting ganked while farming.

but let me assure you my complaints aren't exclusive to me. New comers to this server do not enjoy the constant griefing of pet stealing and pks. so maybe chill out on the pvp carrots and throw some slop to us pvm pigs, this pet skill issue would be a healthy start

It's not as bad as you think! I've been in factions on my tamers for a while now.

I will not lie to you. There are bad times.

However, I have had some hilarious and truly joyous kills on my Provo tamer that I wouldn't have had. Does it offset losses? Not by a long shot. However, the silver drops from faction spawn and savings in SS through the pet res is a huge gain.

I've made millions while losing pennies.

So on the topic of non faction pet skill loss, maybe a pet skill gain perk to add a little bit of a helping hand and another flavor to perks @eppy?

My understanding is that there is nothing wrong with pet loss - in fact it is working perfectly every time I PK a tamer and then their pet. Maybe you should retitle your thread "Let Meta's naturally gain skills above GM" to more accurately describe what the issue is.

TBH though, you cannot tell the difference between a Pet with GM Magery and 120+ Magery ...and you really cannot tell a difference with pet resist.

Lotta truth here. The biggest problem with not being able to level certain skills back to their cap is that once you lose that cushion you can't gain it back naturally and you can get stuck on gains, specifically magery. That happened to me only late in stage 6 meta dragon, but since it was late I never had to use SS before maxing (even letting it die to RDA bosses plenty and actually embracing the XP loss since it helped hold her back from rolling over to 7 because that was before the days of the reroll and control gains) but you highlighted a common misconception which is that magery works incrementally.

Staff said that magery skill is not a factor in spell damage calculation, so either your pet has enough magery to cast FS or it doesn't...simple as that. I think it's something like 80.1. and that's actually the min requirement to cast 8th circle spells so it's like a circle behind, but whatever. Point is, it makes actually less sense to use skill scrolls to keep a meta pet at cap. If your pet get roasted on the reg you want to go ahead and lose your cushion and ride as close to the line as possible to stay just above the req. If a pet with 120 magery dies it loses 1.2. if a pet with 80 dies it loses .8. Don't throw your money away.

Resist matters more as far as SS consumption to keep closer to cap is concerned. The damage saved does add up, especially for non meta pets, but in the end you're still going to be fine even with a plain drag/ww combo with busted ass resist. I rode that train for a long time...lol

With my meta I did use resist SS if I had a bad run between rerolls before joining factions. It cost me very little in the grand scheme of things, and at least the reroll is always there to bail you out on meta pets.

And you can always set your pets up to train resist. It's not fun but it's an option.

I have played this game many years and 99.9% of the time I have no comment on what gets fixed or doesn't, On the many different servers I have been on AOS, Siege, Forever most UO different ages starting with the very first in 1999 etc.. I have found that it is geared toward helping the guilds and reds have a slight advantage over all other players. If a strong guild like the Orcs get a hold on an area, then the perks begin just like what is happening now with the earth element Valorite and other ore spawn. I hit 5 valorite spot last night and got a earth revealed on all 5. Verite is close second. What could have happened was the Orc guild could have been left to have to use a few points for tracking Hide/Steath miners. Of course that might have cut them short on Alchemy or some other aggressive skill they cried for or desired. Of course the peasants (plebes) were appeased with a 50 or 60 of some type of ore if they stay out of hiding (exposed to reds) long enough to kill the element. Sounds more like RL and government running the asylum than balanced game. haha-------"so let the squeaky wheel get the grease" or "The Mason f**kover the plebes"? They wouldn't want to take your guns or control your speech if you weren't a real danger to the Lord and Master State, don't be a fool. Same logic.

In other words they have no intention of fixing this taming bug or it would have been accomplished long ago, plus it is a nice gold sink, since Shane says he has heard about it as opposed to experiencing it I have to assume he doesn't play a Meta. I have heard him say he,-- if I am not mistaken-- something about getting a suit of GM barbed bone. So I really believe at present he is more of a rape and pillage player and could be slightly biased. Reds really hate having to fight a Meta and a Nightmare/WW, I can assure you I know this first hand.

"O" the above isn't to disparage Shane or this severer in any way, UO Forever is by far the best I have encounter in the last 18 years of playing UO off and on. The most outstanding thing I in my experience with UO was a mage with a DP Hally in AOS, loved my DP Hally. I used EQ on site of a bunch of incoming reds and Hally on the closest one and rarely died alone, loved it.
