Ummm so I have a character I am training as a thief and it has been grey for the past few hours. Is this normal?

How are you training him or her? If you've stolen from a character on your other account, your thief will be grey to that character until your thief has died.
Please note that other players attacking you will turn you grey to them, too, while under the effects of permagrey.
