I've never made a tamer before and am wondering what you have to do to get your pets to recall with you instead if having to gate them?

Feed em. Keep em happy for a week and then feed them again to bond them.
Only bonded pets recall with you.

You are probably best feeding them then putting them in a stable for a week then feeding them again once you get them out. I name them the date i put them in the stable. "AugEleven" would be a beast tamed today for example. Or you could buy a pet bonding deed and have 1 pet bonded instantly.
Also when recalling with your pets while they are in combat its best saying "all come" just before you recall to make sure they dont get left behind. :}

i made 2 tamer toons, when i get lazy i use up a summon ball charge if i dont see my pet next to me when i recall.

how can you say it was a waste of time to "everyone". It could have been a waste of time for yourself, but you're being pretty broad assuming it was a waste of time for "everyone".
