So, I've been playing for a good 4 hours and...
I have no clue what to do.
Wandering around, taming animals, being worthless.
Pointers? Cues? Big Neon Messages?

CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT TO DO!

Your first goal will be to get yourself a character built that can be used for exploring and gaining wealth/resources.

You pretty much have two options here:
  • Resource Gatherer
  • Melee Character
If you go the resource gatherer route, this would be like making a miner to collect metal ores, turn them into ingots, and then sell the ingots for money. This way is a good start, it is how I started. I eventually turned my miner into my crafting character who now has Blacksmithy, Tinkering, Tailoring, Lumberjacking, and Carpentry.

If you go with a melee character, the consensus is that a provocation archer is the best starting type character. The idea is that you are an archer that shoots from a distance while you provoke two monsters on each other. This template is very versatile and can be used for the rest of your UO career.

Either way, you can play as you want as this is sandbox game, however gaining some resources and wealth (and maybe a house to live out of), is usually the best first move.

http://www.uoforum.com/threads/fattsons-guide-to-gettin-paid-in-the-shade.66662/

some great info in that thread as well.

i recommend hooking up with one of the guilds that helps out new players. Trin\TBA\TSE alliance is huge and a great starting point for the casual player, if your looking to get more serious about game play later you can always try to get in with one of the more powerful\organized guilds.

I dont know if Stank/*S* recruits new players but they are also a large group and slightly more serious.

if you want a PVP guild EQMS join fee is only 200k, most other PK\PVP guilds are pretty choosy on recruitment

getting a guild will help you with resources to ask questions and show you the ropes of the game, and will also help you avoid\fight PKs, and give you some friends to play with. without a solid guild UO gets boring fast.

if you need help with the basics (spellbook, runebook, some marked locations.) send me a PM and i will help you out..

GL man and don't give up, UO is hard but one of the most rewarding games!!!

Make a bard man....you can be making cash in a say or two. Train provo and music. Also start begging from mpcs....you can get really nice stuff.
Also here's another pointer:

If you get your taming up to 74.5 you can own and bond young dragons, which after some training can be decent money makers, provided you have good hunting spots and don't die a lot.. Some people will even tame them for you for free, that's how I got my set :D.

Young dragons are like strong drakes with magery.

That's what I do to make money and I even die a lot :(, but I still have made decent income.

A stealth bard archer. Super uoforever. U can hide and stealth to check out dungeons. Bard and archery to kill monsters for money. Ultimately when u get a hang of ur char, u can join a guild and do champs. Very handy cuz when pks raid the champ towards the end. U can run towards to the mobs and die. Rez and stealth back to ur corpse. Rarely PKs will get ur stuff if ur corpse is next to millions of mobs. They don't want to die and get stats. In very rare occasions some pks do follow you to the mobs crowd and die next to u.... HAHA. It's time to use ur dagger and chop the heads off

Well... only if u prefer not pvp. Otherwise, provo mobs onto ur enemy and then fight. Good luck!
