It's intentional for crafting and gathering purposes. When new crafting recepies were added, most notably the galleon crafting, a much larger demand for logs arose, not to mention the recipes asked for large amounts of wood. To be able to carry said wood for crafting and to make lumberjacking much less of a burden (not alot of people wanted to chop wood), the log weight was reduced.
