No real guide just kill anything at or higher then your current meta pet's health for max gains.

Stage 1:small animals. Ettins
Stage 2:ettins
Stage3:gazers and stone harpies
Stage 4: deamons drakes and dragons
Stage 5: dragons slayers ancient wyrms.
Stage 6: anything with 900 hp or more basically.
You just want to kill things with the same hp as your pet or higher like Afro said
