So I used to play on here a long time ago.....that said I've not played in ages and houses all are lost...how much trouble is it placing a decent sized house?? Or is the only real way to do so to buy from others???

For a decent size house you need to buy it from a player. You can find open spots for smaller houses fairly easy.

8x8s up to around 10x10s are very, very easy to find with some wandering and ambition. Hell, I placed an 11x11 next to the Yew moongate about 2 months ago so there are nice spots out there.

There are houses that drop all the time, and unless a max storage can be placed (15x15 range) most people wont bother.
If you need a house spot and you see Baby Goose in game I'll hook you up sir, usually have old idoc runes where spots are available.

Cant buy gold. You can buy donotion coins and sell for gold.

Well...lotsa things potentially. There is a dono vender npc at brit bank, theres raffles, you can sell them for gold, expensive deco item for your house, etc.

Right now the conversion is roughly 180, 000 to 200, 000 gold per 1000 dono coins... so if you drop 40 bucks on 5k dono, you could sell that for 900k to a mill roughly.

Dono prices are pretty high right now, I remember buying them for like 40k/1k when the server was very young.

Yeah, i don't remember them ever being over 200k per 1k dono.

I've been getting around 180-185k per 1k with a little patience. To sell immediately price 1k at around 175 and make sure to advertise in IRC as well as at WBB.
