Im pretty sure better ingots increase the durability only for weapons if I remember correctly.

Ingot quality def adds AR bonus for armor.

i just built iron ringail gloves, then shadow ringmail gloves... tried one on and then the other, both only do 2 points of armour.

Your fighting skill also comes into play when determining a piece of armors AR rating. Low fighting skill means that the AR ratings likely won't be as much different as if your fighting skill was GM

What? My smith with 0 skills shows the same AR as my dexer.....

Think you better double check that. ;)

A dex set with plate gorget and heater my 0 skill miner/smith shows 38 AR.
Same exact set with my 100 dex 100 fencing guy shows 48 AR.

This difference in AR is even bigger when you move to full plate.
