breaking items down

So I figured out that I could break down cloth and leather items using the scissors (is this the best method?)

Is there any way to break down all the plate/bone/etc stuff that I find?

You can smelt the armor and weapons using the blacksmithing skill, but the armor and weapons found on mobs do not yield very many ingots. You have to be near a forge to do so. Bone armor cannot currently be recycled. Bones found on zombies and other undead can be cut into smaller bones for use in making bone armor using the tailoring skill.
