He might just have stayed under the impression pet transfer was block there since you cannot lore or tame or mount an ethy in the area... Anyways, I really cannot think of a way you can scam someone selling a pet. Unless you do like some people and rename a regular llama "an etheral llama", hehe.

Anyways you can trade pets anywhere. Checks are blessed and you cannot steal a pet. Hehe. Well... anywhere in a guarded zone.

Does it say a name that you couldnt name a reg horse? I know people do it with mares so I just figured it would be the same. I have never seen one in trade.

You have the icon in the trade window. If someone wants to trade you a rare white horse, you will see a fire steed statuette. If you don't see that, gtfo. For lower end ethys, it's harder because the icon is the same. But if the guy as a llama renamed an ethereal llama right next to him, you can ask yourself some questions.
