I know every one hates to hear it but, Trammel did not ruin UO. It actually kept it alive. UO R was introduction of it. The game was dying beforehand. I'm not saying we need one now, I am not for it, but it isn't true.
Unless if you are looking for 10k plus ingots and no one has been buying them off the vendor so they only have 40 at a time. Yes, I would say they have a purpose.
So we need to bring gigantic groups of organized players, one set fighting champ spawn and the other defending the spawn from raiders, just for a chance at a relic and some 105 or 110 LJ or Peacemaking scrolls? Eff that. Super not worth it.

That's fine. Reds have it easy enough anyway. They can go into towns, join factions, even die in places with no fear of stat loss. There has to be some balance in place so the favor is not entirely with the red, looking to gank someone and spread annoyance.
The more demand for equipment because of losses and breakage would increase the need for crafted equipment, and the market wouldn't be flooded like it is.
I make my own stuff too, and as annoying as it is, keeping your equipment chest stocked is an enjoyable part of the game I feel.
