Mining works differently than lumberjack. You're right, it's dependent on the vein you're mining and there are no additional rare ores other than iron through valorite.

That doesn't affect leveling, however. you don't get the damage increase/damage taken reduction when on cooldown but you still gain xp from hitting monsters.

Well there's not a huge difference between 100 and 120 except the cooldown being lower at 120. Many go to 100 for bod runners which is minimum for chance at every large bod. Some go 80.1 which gives you chance at every small bod but don't give you many larges.
