Magical armor does have more. You need to look for invul not fort. Personally I would make crafted have more ar but cost s lot more ingots.

Well there are lots of ways to kill you even with guards. It's just part of it. They can release scorpions to poison you over and over until you die and never take a count. Guards kill them but not before they get a hit in.
